This tutorial is not too difficult and the finished product is really cute!
Enjoy!
Materials needed:
-fabric (amount located below)
-iron and ironing board
-zipper (7''-9''..or whatever you prefer)
-pins
-ruler
-marking pencil or chalk
-sheers
-zipper foot
-sewing machine and thread..of course :)
Step 1: cut pieces.
-cut 6'' x 9'' this is the front piece (you can make it bigger or smaller depending on your zipper size)
-cut 6'' x 13'' this is for the gathered piece
-cut 6'' x 9'' for the front band (to cover gathering..I used thicker material for this because I didn't have interfacing, so it makes the bag a little sturdier)
-cut TWO 6'' x 9'' this is for the lining
Optional: -cut a pocket (just place a credit card or license and trace around it)
-or you can add any type of divider or pockets you'd like
Step 2:
-fold 6'' x 9'' piece (front band used to cover gathering) in half and sew a straight stitch
Step 3:
-turn band inside out and press flat (set aside)
Step 4:
-mark two lines in the middle, about an inch apart (this will be gathering)
-sew 2 basting stitches (no back-stitch & set stitch length to longest length)
Step 5:
-pull top threads on both sides and top & bottom until the length is about 9''
-once gathered to desired length, tie a knot on each end, top & bottom
Step 6:
-press gathering down
Step 7:
-pin band over gathering
-top-stitch in place
set aside
(don't worry if band is longer than gathered piece, it happens)
Step 8:
-pin and sew pocket in place on lining piece
Step 9:
-pin gathered front and lining piece GOOD sides together and sew (with zipper foot!)
Step 10:
-press down, away from zipper
-and sew straight stitch along zipper (using zipper foot)
Step 11:
-repeat for other side, with back piece and lining
(this can get tricky, think it through. Sometimes it takes me a couple tries of pinning and re-pinning)
Step 12: (no pic)
-repeat step 10: press down, away from zipper and sew (with zipper foot)
It should look like this
Step 13:
-place liner pieces good sides together
-place outside pieces good sides together
-pin and sew edges **leaving an opening at the bottom of the liner**
Step 14:
-turn right side out (well liner side out)..the liner will be on outside (don't worry)
-turn it right side out (with exterior on the outside and liner on the inside)
-push corners out
Step 15:
- pull liner back out and sew liner shut
Step 16:
-push liner back in!
And viola! You're done!
I hope I did an okay job explaining how to do everything. I am so sorry if I didn't. Feel free to leave a comment with any questions or constructive criticism! Thanks so much, I hope you've enjoyed the ride.
